Prosecutors want eight years for Misbakhun

A- A A+

Prosecutors demanded the Central Jakarta District Court sentence Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) legislator Muhammad Misbakhun to eight years’ imprisonment for submitting false documents to Bank Century, now Bank Mutiara.

Prosecutors also demanded he pay Rp 10 billion (US$1.12 million) in fines or serve an additional six months.

Misbakhun has been detained since April 26 for allegedly submitting false documents in an application for a Letter of Credit from the bank.

PT Selalang Prima International, Misbakhun’s trading company, received $22.5 million in credit from the bank in 2007.

As a legislator, Misbakhun helped initiate the inquiry into the Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million) Bank Century bailout. In March the House of Representatives said the bailout was unjustified and therefore illegal.

Authorities have denied the Misbakhun investigation is politically charged.
