State ship manufacturing company PT PAL has delivered a double skin bulk carrier (DSBC) ordered by  Singapore company Azurite Invest Ltd British Virgin Island worth US$29.5 million.

The 50,000 death weight tons (DWT) ship is called Star 50. PT PAL required at least 12 month to construct the ship that will be able to transport bulk commodities such as corn, rice and iron ores as it had a 60,000 m3 of transport capacity.

“We spent 8,500 tons of steel to construct Star 50,” PAL president Harsusanto said, adding the ship is  189,840 meters in length and 30.50 meter in width.

He said that his company also had exported nine similar DSBC to other countries, such as Hong Kong (4 units), Singapore (1 unit) and Turkey (2 units). The ships were registered in Monrovia, Liberia.

“Now PAL is constructing two DSBC ordered by Germany. The company targets to deliver the ships in 2011,” Harsusanto said,

The demand of such merchant ships has increased during the past years and will give good opportunity for PAL to gain more profit.

PAL, located in Surabaya, East Java, builds various kinds of ships as well as repairs and maintains ships.
