KPK vows to find bribe payers sans Nunun

Nunun Nurbaeti failed to answer on Friday a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons to answer questions on a House of Representatives vote-buying scandal, but the antigraft body said it had other witnesses who would testify.

No comment: Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Emir Moeis, who heads the House of Representatives’ Commission XI overseeing finance, leaves the Corruption Eradication Commission building on Friday after being questioned as a witness in a central bank vote buying case. Fourteen PDI-P politicians have been named suspects in the case while another, Dudhie Makmun Murod, has been convicted for receiving bribes. The businesswoman allegedly distributed traveler’s checks to several legislators in 2004 to secure appointment of Miranda Swaray Goeltom as a Bank Indonesia deputy governor. Nunun was expected to reveal to the KPK on Friday the sources of the alleged Rp 24 billion ($US2.69 million) in bribes.

The antigraft body previously named as suspects in the scandal 26 legislators from the 2004 House Commission IX overseeing finance. Another four legislators have been sentenced to prison by the Corruption Court for accepting the bribes.

KPK spokesman Johan Budi said Nunun was an important witness for investigating the bribe payers and establishing their motives.

“However, she’s not the only witness we have to find the bribe payers. We have other witnesses, such as Arie Malangjudo,” Johan told The Jakarta Post over the telephone.

“The 26 suspects will be brought to court as the KPK has never halted any probe into a corruption case,”
he said.

Nunun was scheduled to be questioned by the antigraft commission on Friday about her connections to  suspects from the Golkar Party, including T.M. Nurlif, Reza Kamarullah, Baharuddin Aritonang, and Hengky Baramuli.

It was the first time the KPK has  summoned Nunun. She previously failed to appear before the Corruption Court three times. Her attorney eventually presented a doctor’s note to the court saying Nunun suffered from “severe forgetfulness” and had been seeking treatment in Singapore.

Nunun’s attorney cited the same reason for her failure to appear Friday. In a letter attached to her medical records, Nunun’s husband, former National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. (ret.) Adang Daradjatun, told the commission that his wife could not testify due to illness.

The commission also questioned on Friday Emir Moeis as a witness about his fellow former legislators from the PDI-P.

Panda Nababan, also a suspect in the scandal, reported several Corruption Court judges to the National Commission on Human Rights for allegedly violating his human rights on Friday.

“The judges have not carried out a fair trial and the evidence presented in court has been used by the Corruption Eradication Commission to name me as a suspect,” the PDI-P legislator said Friday.

Panda said this will prevent him from obtaining a legal resolution based on justice and truth under the law. (lnd)
