President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with leaders of several state institutions at the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) building in Jakarta on Monday.
The President only stood alongside the MPR speaker Taufik Kiemas, a politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), while the latter delivering his speech over the meeting.
"We become even more convinced over the importance of strengthening our country's four pillars, i.e. the Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Indonesian United Republic (NKRI), and the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity)," Taufik said during his speech.
Taufik said in order to strengthen the four pillars, the country needed to continuously develop its presidential system and its regional autonomy system.
"We need to answer to the empowerment of Indonesian democracy that includes the enhancement of our politics and the regional election system, which provides ways to select the best regional leaders," Taufik said.
Taufik also said that the government needed to develop new economic areas in order to narrow the economic gap among regions.
After Taufik gave his speech, Yudhoyono did not give his words but left the MPR complex in his presidential car.
