Around 1,000 students marked the end of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's first year in his second term by rallying across the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar.

Students from Hasanuddin University, Muslim University of Indonesia, '45 University, Muhammadiyah University and Alaudiin Islamic State University staged rallies at their respective campuses.

The students considered Yudhoyono had failed to create a better condition for the nation, especially in law enforcement and social welfare.

The rallies were also marked with violent acts.

Hasanuddin University students damaged two cars belonging to the state department, turning one car upside down.

The Muslim University of Indonesia students held a police officer captive in demand that the police stop firing warning shots in a heated rally.v
