Prijanto experiences Monday’s terrible gridlock

The terrible traffic congestion that crippled most of Jakarta from Monday afternoon until late evening provided an enlightening experience for Jakarta deputy governor Prijanto.

“I believe many people suffered through last night’s gridlock. I myself had to walk two kilometers under an umbrella, from Jatinegara to Kedati (East Jakarta),” Prijanto said Tuesday at City Hall, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

Governor Fauzi Bowo refused to comment on the traffic jam.

Heavy rains Monday caused a number of Jakarta’s rivers to flood, inundating several major streets and felling a number of trees, bringing rush hour traffic to a standstill.

The traffic, especially on routes heading toward Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang, reportedly began to ease between 10 and 11 p.m.
