Authorities at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta have closed the airport since Saturday morning following to rain of ashes from Mount Merapi, where an eruption Tuesday killed at least 33 people.

“We are currently cleaning up the ashes to avoid being sucked in to airplane’s engine,” the airport operational manager Halendra told a local radio as quoted by Kompas.com.

Five airplanes of Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Airlines, Batavia Air, Express and Lion Air, which were scheduled to fly Jakarta, Makassar and Surabaya, are still parked at the airport following to the airport’s closing, he added.

“We apologize for the inconvenient from the disruption of flight schedule,” said Halendra.

At the time of writing, the airport has yet to be re-opened.
