Dolly sex-district to be monitored by CCTV

S

URABAYA: CCTV cameras will be installed at Dolly to deter new sex workers in what may be the biggest red light district in Southeast Asia.

Head of the city Communication and Information Agency of Surabaya municipal administration, Chalid Buhari, said recently that if new faces were spotted, the authority would promptly send them away “Surabaya is not accepting any new commercial sex workers,” he said.

The city administration is looking to curb any growth before moving to close down the district.

Dolly operators oppose the CCTV plan. Reports say up to 600 customers visit nightly, bringing monthly revenue of Rp 15 billion.

“This also means that it threatens economic activities in the surrounding areas,“ Dolly head Mario said.

Data shows that of 1,200 Dolly sex workers, some 900 have contracted infectious sexual diseases including HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, kondiloma, kandida and trikomonas vaginalis.

The local community health center also notes that this year alone 16 new HIV cases were detected at Dolly and Jarak, another sex industry location. — JP
