Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician Muhammad Misbakhun
says that he will appeal against the verdict sentencing him for a one-year
imprisonment for an involvement in a bogus letter of credit in the now defunct
Bank Century.
The verdict was issued on Tuesday.
“What has been charged upon me today was based on a criminal
code [KUHP] article No. 263 that had never been used by the attorney. The
attorney originally used Article No. 49 paragraph No. 1 from the Banking Law on
me,” Misbakhun told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
“In his consideration, the judge admitted that this issue is
an object of the civil law code, then why suddenly it became a criminal code
issue,” Misbakhun said.
Misbakhun also questioned the judge’s decision to only
implicate him in the bogus letter of credit scandal.
“If I am guilty of manipulating documents, which were
formulated by the bank, then why there was no punishment for anyone from the
bank?” he said.
Misbakhun deemed that the verdict against him was part of
politics as he was involved in initiating the House of Representatives inquiry
team on the Bank Century debacle, which revolved around a bailout that rose ten
times to Rp 6.7 trillion (US$740 million) from its original estimation.
