RI students in Australia gather donations for Mentawai, Merapi victims

Groups of Indonesian students in Wollongong
and Brisbane, Australia
have collected donations to be delivered to victims and families of victims in Mentawai Islands
of West Sumatra and Mount Merapi, which borders Yogyakarta and Central Java.
Lukman Noerochim, chief of the Association of Indonesian
Students in Australia for Wollongong University, said that the charity act had
been conducted since Monday.
“We managed to collect AUS$2,560 so far and will directly
send them to the Indonesian Red Cross to be delivered to disaster sites,” Lukman
told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.
Aulia Akbar, president of University of Queensland
Indonesian Student Association, said his group
would also hold fund raisings on Nov. 12 and 19.
An earthquake of 7.2-magnitude on the Richter scale on Oct.
25 killed at least 400 people. Meanwhile, a series of eruption at Mount Merapi
since Oct. 26 have claimed more than 100 lives so far.
