With the suspension of flights to and from Yogyakarta’s Adi Sucipto Airport due to the recent Mount Merapi eruption, many travelers are taking the train instead.
As of Saturday, state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has added nine additional carriages with a combined capacity of up to 600 passengers, for services between Yogyakarta and Jakarta, kompas.com reported Sunday.
KAI spokesman Eko Budiyanto said the extra carriages would at least run until Monday.
Other routes, including Yogyakarta-Surabaya and Yogyakarta-Bandung had not seen any increase in passenger numbers yet, he said.
