JAKARTA: The city government expects to build 1,150 low-cost houses starting next year for poor residents who are evicted from some of the city’s crowded riverbanks.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said the city administration had readied Rp 4.57 trillion (US$513 million) to finance the housing project and improvement of public facilities.

“There is a pressing need for the construction of such a project. This is why we have allocated so much for the construction of hundreds of houses,” Fauzi was quoted by Beritajakarta.com.

In 2009, the city administration claimed it had constructed 14 apartment buildings comprising 1,350 units.

This year, the administration has built 10 apartment towers for the poor, comprising more than 1,000 apartment units. — JP
