Govt upbeat about excise revenue

The government is optimistic that it would retrieve more revenue from excise this year thanks to the new excise tax for tobacco and alcoholic drinks.

Based on data issued by the Directorate General of Taxation, as of Oct. 28 the government has received Rp 53.7 trillion (US$ 6 billion) from excise, or 90.6 percent of the Rp 59.3 trillion targeted for this year.

“The tobacco excise contributes 96 percent of total excise revenue, while the alcoholic drink excise adds 3.69 percent,” Evy said, quoted by Kontan.co.id.

The government has planned to raise the tobacco excise by an additional five percent next year
