As many as 1,481 villages in
East Nusa Tenggara are in short of food supply caused by harvest failure, an
official says.
East Nusa Tenggara food
security agency Niko Nuhan said Tuesday the crop failure was an impact of El
Nino that has been hitting since the planting season in 2009.
Pest attack and floods also
contributed to the food crisis, he added.
The local government is
helping by allocating funds from the provincial budget and giving 100 tons of
rice to every regency in East Nusa Tenggara.
Niko also said that the central
government had also provided 2,859 tons of rice to the affected villages.
