Mayor candidates claim S. Tangerang election tainted by fraud
One pair of candidates running for the South Tangerang mayor post has refused to sign official vote count documents at the district election organizing committee (PPK), alledging that fraud tainted the election.
The pair of Arsid and Andre Taulany said they believed fraud had occurred on election day, and that they had found a number of irregularities and indications that some ballots had been counted more than once in several subdisitrcts in Ciputat and East Ciputat.
“We have strong evidence of fraud and vote markups,” Suryadi Niam, the Arsid-Andre Taulany ticket campaign coordinator said Tuesday.
He said a group of unidentified people who were not listed as registered voters had cast votes. They said this had happened in neighbourhood unit 10 in Sawah Lama subdisitrct in Ciputat.
Citing another example, he said fraud had occurred in Serua Indah subdistrict, aledging that 174 ballots had been tampered with.
“These are just two examples of many indications that convince us not to sign the vote count documents,” he added.
Separately, the local independent election monitoring group, Jaring Pemilih Tangerang Selatan (JPTS), agreed that violations had occurred in the two districts.
"We are collecting evidence of violations and fraud allegations pertaining to election day because we are paying special attention to the growing issues of civil servant involvement in the election process,” JPTS secretary Ali Irvan said, adding that the JPTS could not tolerate manipulation in the election.
The South Tangerang poll watch body also admitted it had discovered a number of violations and fraud allegations in the election.
“We discovered a voter cast votes twice at the same polling station. In another form of violation we found that a voter had used a different ID card when casting votes at a polling station,” he said.
However, he said, the poll authority needed time to investigate the allegations to determine who was responsible for the violations.
The four candidate tickets who contested the election on Saturday are Yayat Sudradjat-Norodom Sukarno, Rodiah Najibah-Sulaiman Yasin, Arsid-Andre Taulany and Airin Rachmi Diany-Benyamin Davnie.
Quick count results announced by the Indonesian Survey Institute in cooperation with Citra Indonesia Consultants showed that 44 percent of the 732,190 registered voters turned up to the 1,890 polling stations across the city.
The quick count put the ticket of Airin Rachmi Diany and Benyamin Davnie in first place with 147,824 votes or 46.09 percent, followed by Arsid and Andre Taulany with 146,590 votes or 45.83 percent.
The Yayat Sudradjat-Norodom Sukarno ticket had 6 percent of the votes, while the Rodiah Najibah-Sulaiman Yasin ticket had 2 percent.
