The country’s No. 2 cop says the National Police are ready to investigate allegations of high-level graft suspect Gayus Tambunan’s unauthorized absences from official custody.

Nothing has interfered with the police’s investigation of the scandal, National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Jusuf Manggabarani said.

“I am optimistic that we can tackle the case,” Manggabarani said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com news portal.

Previously, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Bibit S Rianto said the KPK was ready to take over the police’s investigation if necessary.

Gayus’ alleged unauthorized Bali vacation drew ire from activists, who said the police’s failure to keep the graft suspect in custody supported claims that the KPK should be in charge of the case.
