Letter: Green economy

This is a comment on an article titled “Green economy: Growth is not good enough”, (the Post, Nov. 15)
I am glad that you advocate the real need for and the meaning of “green
economy”, which includes the notion of “social justice”, as this is
lacking in many mining sites in Indonesia. One can not forget Freeport.
As with other principles like environmental sustainability, coal mining
in East Kalimantan and to some extent in Central Kalimantan beginning in
2002 is really far from any sustainability principles. Yet the number
of permits to conduct open-cast mining in these two areas has been
growing significantly.
I wish Bappenas could do more about these violations of green economic
principles. I know, you have stated that this advocacy for a green
economy is your own personal view. But, hey, the personal is political.
