Letter: Human rights and SBY

A- A A+

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono cannot avoid human rights issues. He cannot sit on the fence forever, looking at human rights violations before shelving them.

Papua is part of this nation and its citizens have the same rights as the rest of Indonesia. Dismiss and jail those responsible for extreme human rights  violations. Replace officials in Papua who are just vegetating and not doing their jobs properly.

SBY should realize that the Internet is part of our lives and serves as a powerful weapon for seeking justice. More proof of human rights violations will hit Facebook, Twitter and YouTube soon.

Where is the President of this country? Why is he forever putting human rights violations on the backburner? Is he afraid of losing his job? SBY will go down in Indonesian history as the President who kept stalling and hesitating and postponing important decisions.

Look at the Gayus case; this criminal can leave jail anytime he wants. He enjoys short trips to Bali for a holiday and Singapore for banking matters. He carries on like nothing has ever happened to him. Legislators should draft a law whereby corruptors should be immediately executed. But then, of course, we will lose half of this government.

The Police are redundant. They are not doing their jobs, the legal system is crippled and powerless and big-time criminals enjoy lavish lifestyles — even in prison!

The public had high hopes for Indonesia when SBY became President, but the majority are so disillusioned now that they cannot wait for the next Presidential elections when a new President will possibly give this country a better future.
