State prosecutor Cirus Sinaga has said there was an irregularity in the Attorney General’s Office’s
handling of the case implicating graft suspect Gayus H. Tambunan, at the South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday afternoon, newswire Kompas.com reported.
Testifying as a witness in the trial of Gayus, Cirus said the corruption and money laundering cases implicating Gayus had been handled by the general crime division, but should have been given to the special crime division.
Asked by presiding judge Albertina Ho whether he was aware of the irregularity, Cirus confirmed “yes”.
Cirus said that according to the Attorney General’s Office’s regulations, corruption and human rights cases should be managed by the special crime division, and money laundering cases by the general crime section.
The prosecution is charging Gayus only with violating Criminal Code article 372 on embezzlement, despite that Gayus earlier admitted that he bribed police detectives, prosecutors and a judge to evade legal charges facing him for helping scores of major companies evade tax.
