The coastal areas of Kerayaan Kecil Island in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, are being worn away by aggressive abrasion, a city councilor warns.
A councilor with the South Kalimantan council, Hasmy Fadillah Akbar, blamed higher than normal tides for the damage.
“We should replant mangroves on our shores to prevent further abrasion,” Hasmy said as quoted by Antara newswire.
He called on the local administration, NGOs and private parties to support the effort.
Hasmy said the local administration should pay more attention to the damage being done to the city's infrastructure.
“Nearly 80 kilometers of the 120 kilometers of roads connecting Tanjung Serdang to Tanjung Seloka in Kotabaru is severely damaged,” he said.
He said the local administration could consult with the city council if the administration was facing budgetary constraints.
