Comment: Ical to report media to police

N

em>Nov. 23, Online

Golkar Party chairman, businessman and former coordinating minister for people’s welfare Aburizal “Ical” Bakrie plans to file a police report over media reports that he alleged have implicated him in the activities of graft suspect Gayus Halomoan Tambunan.
The Bakrie Group patron will also file a complaint with the Press Council over media reports that he said had “cornered” him. Aburizal said that he had directly complained to the respective media organizations to clarify that the reports they made were wrong and contrary to fact.
“[Media organizations] are stubborn. For that reason, we will bring the case to the police [on Wednesday],” Bakrie said while attending the Golkar Party’s Central Kalimantan branch anniversary celebration, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com . Aburizal did not mention specific media organizations.

Your comments:

We Indonesians need to know the truth. For too long, many Indonesian newspapers and TV stations have twisted the truth, lied to us and made us believe that what they say is true.
Ical needs to push hard against the media and these reporters and defend himself.
Ical is a smart businessman, but he is hopeless in defending himself. That is why we all think he is bad. The media are to blame.
The government needs to set the standard for media reporting.

Budi, you are wrong. The media should pursue cases such as this relentlessly. Indonesia does have freedom of expression and freedom of journalism.
After all, Ical is a public figure and as such it is only appropriate that he be put in the spotlight.
You cannot have it both ways. He cannot be a public figure and at the same time want isolation from prying eyes. If he is isolating himself from the media then it makes people wonder what is it that he is trying to hide or even worse, using his public position to create a roadblock.
If he has nothing to hide, then why is he worried about some
news about him meeting with Gayus in Bali?
In fact, it is not just journalists who should be involved. Bring in the big guns, such as investigative journalists, to uncover the truth.
Everyone wants the truth, right? If later on there is evidence of slander, then he can file a complaint. My recommendation to the journalists: Go for it and do a thorough investigation then publish what you find truthfully!
