The President says corruption is lingering in the nation’s tax office and law
enforcement institutions.
"About 70 percent of our state income passes through the tax sector. Fraud
and abuse in the sector will significantly affect development and economic
growth,” President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in his opening speech of the
2010 National Corruption Eradication Conference on Wednesday
“Unfortunately, corruption still
exists," he added.
He also voiced concern over corruption in law enforcement agencies such as the
National Police and the Attorney General's Office.
"Prevent and eradicate corruption practices committed by law enforcement
officers! Can you imagine? Law enforcement agencies are supposed to be on the
front line - but they themselves have committed the offense." Yudhoyono
said.
Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) activist Emerson Yuntho said the Yudhoyono
needed to prove his words by taking proactive measures.
"As President, he could do
so many things rather than just talking, if he is really disappointed in
judicial corruption," Emerson said.
