Stricter screening for Adipura

JAKARTA: The government will implement a three-step selection process, screening out the unqualified candidates in each stage, to decide the winner of the annual Adipura environmental award.
The Adipura Cleanliness Award is presented to regencies and municipalities that commit to keeping the environment clean.
“We are still waiting for the revision of a ministerial decree and the adoption of the proposed-government regulation on waste before applying this new selection system,” Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
The Environment Ministry is proposing the implementation of the single-elimination system as part of its response to recent criticism on the selection process by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who asked the ministry to withdraw Adipura medals from winners that were unable to maintain cleanliness.
Under the new selection process, regencies and municipalities cannot join the next stage if they fail to achieve or maintain a certain standard, he added. — JP
