Do it yourself in Gayus investigation: KPK

The Commission Eradication Commission says it will pursue the tax fraud case implicating graft suspect Gayus Tambunan on its own after the police said they would not invite the Commission to join the investigation.

“We need more statements, evidence and information,” Commission deputy chairman Mochammad Jasin said Friday.
Jasin said his commission, however, is waiting for formal clarification from the police on their reason for dropping the plan to involve the KPK in the investigation.

Last week, the National Police said that they would invite several institutions, including the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Judicial Mafia Taskforce and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to see a
presentation of its progress in the investigation in the Gayus case.

However, National Police Detective Chief Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi said later that the police would only give access to the investigation to their internal investigators.

“The National Police chief has instructed that access is a technical issue for the investigators,” Ito said Friday. “So, it [access] is only for internal matters.”

Jasin said sharing information between law enforcement institutions is crucial to shed light on solve Gayus’ tax fraud case.

“We will find out during the sharing of information what the KPK has and what the police have,” he said.

Jasin emphasized that the Commission would continue to collect information on the case pending formal clarification from the police.
