The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) under its newly appointed chief will likely remain unable to probe allegations of impropriety surrounding the Bank Century bailout, a politician says.
The government’s resistance to tackle the case motivated Busyro Muqoddas' recent appointment as the antigraft body’s chief, Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) politician Permadi said as reported by kompas.com.
“The House of Representatives has already become the government’s ally. Therefore, we can’t expect them to push the KPK to handle the case. I think nothing will happen on the case over the next four or
five years,” Permadi told demonstrators in front of KPK headquarters on Sunday.
The rally was organized by the NGO Bendera to mark International Anticorruption Day on Dec.9.
A special committee of the House of Representatives recommended last year that the KPK investigate the bailout, which was allegedly orchestrated by former finance minister Sri Mulyani and Vice President Boediono, then Bank Indonesia governor.
The KPK later said there was no evidence of corruption surrounding the bailout.
