Malls attract shoppers with sales

I

f you enter Centro department store these days, you will enjoy a beautiful Christmas ambience.

From Nov. 18, 2010 until Dec. 29, 2010 this department store located at Plaza Semanggi, Mall Of Indonesia, Kelapa Gading; Margo City, Depok; Ambarrukmo Plaza, Yogyakarta and Discovery Shopping Mall, Bali carries the theme “I Love Christmas”. Department stores like Matahari, Metro and Sogo have a similar ambience and are decorating their stores with Christmas trees and other Christmas paraphernalia.

Indeed malls in Jakarta and other major cities in Indonesia face tough competition. However, city people that love shopping always seem to crowd the malls, especially during the holiday season, making it the season for store owners to mint money.

Shopping centers and malls offer various marketing gimmicks, including huge discounts, while some are open until midnight such as Grand Indonesia, Mall of Indonesia and Supermall Karawaci.

Other malls in Jakarta that are also using various clever marketing strategies during the holiday season are: Emporium Pluit, Pluit Village, Plaza Senayan, Central Park, Gajah Mada Plaza, Menteng Plaza, EX Plaza Indonesia, Plaza Atrium, fX Lifestyle X’nter, MGK Kemayoran, Kelapa Gading Mall, La Piazza, Artha Gading Mall, Sports Mall Kelapa Gading, Arion Mall, Ciputra Mall, Daan Mogot Mall, Puri Indah Mall, Taman Anggrek Mall, Blok M Plaza, Blok M Mall, Blok M Square, Ambassador Mall, Pondok Indah Mall, Pacific Place and still many more, with a grand total of 130 — the largest number of malls in any one city in the world.

So, clearly you don’t have any reason to go to Singapore because similar malls are now available in Jakarta. Numerous products and brands are also available, such as P.S., Chic Simple, Body and Soul, Contempo, Invio, Sorella, Nautica, Chronotech, Hush Puppies, Jack Nicklaus, Ambrogio, Hana, Palomino, Elle, Gobelini, Kickers, Revlon, Maybelline, Florence, Elegance, Terry Palmer, Parachute and still many more.

Some shopping tips

Wise consumers are always cautious before deciding on a purchase. Prepare a budget for Christmas shopping. Stores offer huge discounts to lure as many customers as possible and everyone would like to get a quality item at a low price. So, don’t be surprised if the department stores are packed with customers.

To avoid any regrets you are advised to read the following shopping tips:

- Don’t wait for discount offers. Many people wait for a discount or sale period, but there is no guarantee that the item you require will be offered on discount. So, if you have the budget just go ahead and buy it. Similarly, make a list of people you want to give Christmas presents to and shop early so that you have the freedom to choose and get quality products.

- Make a shopping list. Window shopping often causes us to buy things we don’t actually need. To purchase according to your budget it is advisable to make a shopping list, hence you avoid purchasing discounted items that are not on your list. Just move on!

- Budget planning. Although there are many attractive branded items, stay within your budget, don’t be tempted. Keep the receipts because you may need them if you wish to replace the items for a different size or color.

- Online shopping. If you limited time you can always shop online as nowadays there are numerous stores that offer such facilities. Simply choose the item, and pay via ATM or e-banking and soon the ordered product will be delivered to your address. Well, online shopping is indeed not as attractive as shopping in the malls where you can entertain yourself by window shopping.

Happy shopping!
