ecember is always a good time to be a kid in Singapore. Not only does the prospect of receiving that much-anticipated Christmas gift look brighter with the shopping craze currently happening around town; children also don’t have to go to school for a whole month!

Young visitors to Singapore in December can certainly benefit from the various kids’ programs at this time of the year. The Singapore Zoo, for example, has lined up many enriching and entertaining activities at “Zoo-hoo! Let’s Play Work!”

The program runs on selected days between November and December and invites children with “wild” ambitions to try out different jobs at various parts of the park.

For instance, aspiring veterinarians can head to Boat Dock 1 to help nurse a Malayan tapir back to health, while those with a green thumb can assist the horticulturist at the zoo’s Orchid Garden.

Meanwhile, future conservationists will be asked to “protect” endangered animals in an interactive game at the Garden Pavilion.

Upon completion of all six activities, participants will be rewarded with free ice-cream and a Zoo-Hoo button badge. Log on to zoo.com.sg to find out more, and catch the next Zoo-Hoo! days on Dec. 11, 12, 18 and 19 starting at 10 a.m.

(Another thing that may be of interest: if you happen to be visiting during the weekends, you can try feeding the three generations of Sun Bears currently residing at the zoo. The token feeding session is open throughout December only.)

While still on the subject of entertaining the younger crowd, expect a little magic to unfold at the Asian Civilizations Museum this Sunday, where illusionists JC Sum and “Magic Babe” Ning will make members of the audience disappear before your very eyes.

The pair, dubbed “Asia’s most famous illusionists” by The Straits Times, are well-known for their innovative tricks that have so far included teleporting people and objects over great distances and successfully predicting outcomes of the national lottery.

This time around, Sum and Ning will make five people vanish while elevating them six meters above the ground. Curious? Then check out “The Aerial Exit – A Mega Illusion in the Air” on Dec. 12; and do bring the whole family with you!

Last but not least, here’s a chance to infuse your little one with a little sophistication and nurture his or her early appreciation of the arts.

Throughout this month, SBin Art Plus Gallery (sbinartplus.com) is celebrating the joy of a mother’s love with Happyartland, a solo exhibition from Indonesia’s contemporary artist Theresia Agustina S.

This showcase of 10 works in various mediums such as drawing, sculpture and graphic art represent Tere’s “childlike delight in the discovery of a happy world full of wonders and new experiences” as seen through the eyes of her young daughter Blora.

Happyartland runs through Dec. 24, six days a week except Mondays at the MICA Building.
