There were 21 cases of corruption reported in Malang this year to date - four more than in 2009 and 14 more than in 2008, the Malang Corruption Watch (MCW) says.
One of this year’s 21 cases was new, 18 were old cases unresolved by prosecutors and two were old cases unresolved by the police, according to the report, which was released on Thursday to mark International Anti-Corruption Day.
Investigation of seven cases has come to a standstill, MCW representative Zia Ul Haq told The Jakarta Post
“The small cases are always the ones that are fully investigated because they do not have any political impact,” he said.
The MCW would report the Malang Prosecutor’s Office to the Attorney General's Office and the Corruption Eradication Commission if prosecutors failed to pursue the cases, Zia said.
Corruption occurred at all levels, including the executive and legislative branches, Zia said, with the main violations including misappropriation of state funds and bribery.
The Malang administration is comprised of Malang regency and Malang and Batu municipalities.
The total losses to the state were Rp 60.1 billion (US$ 6.6711), according to the report.
In one case, former Malang regent Sujud Pribadi allegedly misappropriated Rp. 1.167 billion of state funds to finance an overseas trip for regency officials and social figures.
