Deputy Attorney General Kemal Sofyan Nasution has denied graft suspect Gayus Tambunan's allegation that Gayus bribed him, saying he had never seen the suspect expect on the news on TV.

Kemal, who is currently the Attorney General's Office's deputy for administrative crimes, added that he also did not know Haposan Hutagalung, Gayus' former lawyer, who Gayus said told Gayus to give money to Kemal during the handling of the former's embezzlement
and money laundering case in 2009.

“Before [I saw him] in the news on TV, I never knew him [Haposan], and this also includes Gayus” Kemal said Friday in Jakarta.

According to Gayus, Haposan asked him to give money to the “new deputy attorney general,” after he had already paid US$500,000 in bribes to Abdul Hakim Ritonga, the “old” Deputy.

Haposan may have been referring to Kemal as the old deputy attorney general.

“If Gayus said that, then ask Haposan, when did I meet him?” Kemal said.

He said said he did not intend to take legal action against Gayus for slander.

“Gayus might have been deceived by Haposan, or Haposan might have been deceived by my subordinates,” Kemal said.

He said it was not unusual for lawyers to “sell names,” including his.
