The eventual winner of the South Tangerang mayoral election, Airin Rachmy Diany, says she will abide by the ruling of the Constitutional Court annulling the result of the election and ordering a re-run.
“We have informed that the accusations against us by losing candidates are untrue. So, now we leave it all to society to judge,” she told The Jakarta Post.
Airin said she hoped that South Tangerang residents would be willing to return to the polling stations and vote in the re-run.
“The main purpose of a regional division is to improve people’s welfare and conditions in all developmental sectors. I just can’t imagine how much more money will be spent financing another election,” she added.
South Tangerang election commission chairman Iman Perwira Bachsan said his commission would obey the court's ruling.
“We have to abide by the decision even though the commission has no regulations on a re-run,” he told the Post.
“The administration anticipated a rerun as it initially allocated a budget for a two-round election. We can claim it [the budget] to finance the re-run,” he said.
The Constitutional Court has annulled the South Tangerang mayoral election and ordered the South Tangerang Election Commission to re-run the election at all polling stations in South Tangerang.
The court also ordered all election-related institutions, such the poll watch body and election monitoring committees, to tightly monitor the re-run, which should be held within 90 days after the court’s decision.
