Letter: Wise management of resources

An abundance of natural resources is one thing of which we Indonesians
are justly proud. There aren’t many countries blessed with such a
diverse ecosystem.
We often forget about the pivotal role our natural capital plays in the
well-being of our nation’s economy and the well-being of our growing
population.
We blame the government for neglecting many of the nation’s problems, such as infrastructure or corruption, but what we don’t notice is that we fail to solve the problems that lie in our own hands.
Our market-driven economy has led the majority of Indonesians to treat
our forests and seas as mere money-makers. Anything without monetary
value is neglected. Although it may not have much economic value now,
the nation’s ecosystem is of great value in the long-run.
The key to this problem is mainly in the hands of businesspeople in our
nation. Although we are still developing economically, it is important
that we widen our views and leave a substantial legacy for future
generations.
