The government has completed the draft of a bill on Yogyakarta's province’s special status.
The bill stipulates that the governor will be chosen by the Provincial Legislative Council’s (DPR-D). The draft has been submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR).
House deputy speaker from the Golkar Party Priyo Budi Santoso said the DPR would study the draft.
"The government is pleased to submit the draft and we will study it. The mechanism changes are common because we are formatting the regional election," Priyo said, as quoted by Kompas.com on Thursday evening.
If the reasoning behind the changes in the draft is sound, the DPR will consider them, he said.
“The choices are for the [governor] to be [appointed] by direct election or chosen by the DPR-D,” Priyo said.
