TANGERANG: Residents of Kadu Agung, Tangerang, staged a demonstration Monday to protest what they claimed was the contamination of their water supply by a salt factory.

The protesters alleged company PT Lautan Garam disposed its waste water near to the source of their water supply.

“As a result, the water now turns very salty,” said Bustami, one of the protesters.

Bustami called on the Tangerang government and the local council to investigate their claims, and take stern action against the company.

Contacted separately, the spokesperson of the company, Hutami Wijaya, said he had never heard any complaints from local residents.

“With these objections by the residents, I think it is time for us to realize our plan to relocate to East Java,” he said. — JP
