A team in charge of the protection of Fort Somba Opu
historical site will report alleged destruction on the site as a result of the
Gowa Discovery Park development in Makassar, South Sulawesi, to United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and police.
“UNESCO has the authority to protect Fort Somba Opu as a
world cultural heritage site,” M. Nawir the coordinator of the protection
committee, said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Asmunandar, an archeologist from Hasanuddin University, said
that his team was collecting evidence to substantiate the report.
He said the park's construction was against the 2010
Cultural Heritage Preservation Law.
The initial plan to build the park by developer PT Mirah
Megah Wisata actually did not include a water park, Asmunandar added.
However, the developer had revised the plan by including a
water park, a construction which reportedly may damage the historical fort
built in the 16th century.
