Letter: Mountain can’t tolerate two tigers

This is a comment on an article titled “Don’t be losers Yogya, the future is yours” (The Jakarta Post, Dec. 15. p. 7).
To preserve this quality, measures taken need to be realistically long-term.
There is no advantage in preserving the sultanate as a leadership
position in Yogyakarta. On the other hand, it can potentially bring all
kinds of complications to governmental operations.
For example everyone sometimes has different opinions regarding the
simplest things and if there’s ever a
difference in opinion or
perspective in government’s policies then a tussle of power is extremely
possible between the sultan and the central government, and this brings
extra problems.
The sultanate has its few beneficiaries and family members, and let’s
say in the case that one of these decided to protect a political
criminal because of their favor, then there would be more challenges
brought to running the administration.
In China there is a saying that a mountain can’t tolerate two tigers.
In this context it means Yogyakartans must not recognize more than one
leader, or risk more time and resources consuming complications in
operations of this already troubled government.
