Pope gives UK Christmas message on British radio

Pope Benedict XVI has made the first appearance by a head of the Catholic church on a flagship British radio show - though opponents criticized broadcasters for failing to use the opportunity to challenge his church's record on sex abuse.

The pope contributed a recorded message to the regular "Thought For the Day" slot on BBC Radio 4's main news program "Today" on Friday. The feature has offered a platform to a range of religious figures since 1970.

In the message, recorded at the Vatican on Wednesday, the pope tells British people he will pray "for your families, for your children, for those who are sick, and for those who are going through any form of hardship" during Christmas celebrations.

Opponents say the BBC, saying is offering the pope a platform without challenging his church's record on sex abuse.
