High hopes: Newly appointed Judicial Commission chairman Eman Suparman (right) and his deputy Imam Anshori Saleh talk about matters at the commission’s office Thursday. JP/Nurhayati
University of Padjajaran in Bandung,
West Java, professor Eman Suparman was elected
the new chair of the Judicial Commission on Thursday.
Eman received four of the seven votes, while his rival,
former Supreme Court justice Abbas Said, received three votes.
Many feared the commission would be doomed if Abbas, who is
considered by some to be unqualified for the job because of a poor track record,
was selected as the chair.
Abbas, along with 30 other Supreme Court justices, had
previously filed a judicial review on the commission’s authority to monitor
justices at the Constitutional
Court.
During the second round of voting to select the commission's
deputy, former legislator Imam Ansori Saleh received four votes out of seven,
making him the deputy chairman. (ipa)
