Issue: ‘RI wins second leg, fails to win cup’

A- A A+

Dec. 29, Online

Indonesia’s national soccer team scored 2-1 against Malaysia on Wednesday in the second leg of the Asian Football Federation (AFF) Cup, but this was not enough to give the team the champion title due to their loss in the first leg.
Malaysia’s Mohd Safee delivered the first goal in the second half of the game. He also scored two goals in the first leg of the finals at Malaysia’s Bukit Jalil Stadium last Sunday, in a game that ended in 3-0 for the home country.
However, Indonesia retaliated when Muhammad Nasuha scored its first goal in the 73rd minute, followed by another goal delivered by Muhammad Ridwan 12 minutes later.

Fiery finals: Malaysian Captain Safiq bin Rahim (8) attempts to calm Indonesia’s Muhammad Ridwan during the second leg match of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup final at Bung Karno Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday night. Malaysia won the cup with an aggregate score of 4-2. JP/J. I am Malaysian but I was impressed at the way Indonesian supporters behaved. We, Malaysians, really need to learn to be more civilized like our neighbors, Indonesians.
We should stop cheating and acting as if we were the best. I would like to apologize to the Indonesians on behalf of my fellow Malaysians for our cunning ways (using lasers) to win the cup. Anyway, I am proud of my team, but I think the Indonesian team is also great, and I think the winners of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup are the Indonesian supporters.

It is just a game, winning or losing is normal. The winner is not always the champion. We respect your effort and strived hard to win last night. If we did our best then the result we hand over to Allah the Almighty. Congratulations, my Garuda soccer team, you did well. Thanks.

Yeah Indonesia was a better team in the second leg and Malaysia got it in the first leg. Congratulations to the both teams. This is modern football, with some sort of regulation in competitions where you lose but actually you are the champions. If the Suzuki Cup used World Cup regulations I think the result would have been different.
The fans with the lasers, whether from Malaysia or Indonesia, were not true football fans. They just tarnished their country’s image and spoiled the joy of winning. I just don’t know what they were thinking. We go to a stadium to watch a beautiful game of football, not a laser show.

Congratulations to your football team. You showed great progress in football. We are so proud of you.
In the beginning we thought there would be a war in Jakarta, and saw on Internet there were lots of tanks around Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, but again I was so proud to see Indonesian supporters were sportive — not making problems.

Congrats to Indonesia and Malaysia. In future both teams will be great in the World Cup.
To those Malaysians and Indonesians who always talk badly about the opposition — please go back to your room and sleep. Don’t use this situation to create more hate between our countries.
I was at the stadium last night, and I know how hard the Indonesian supporters supported their team and I could understand how they kept down their ego to accept the loss. But all in all, it ran smoothly and even though we were worried, nothing happened at all. It was really a touching moment.
Congratulations to Indonesian supporters as well.

Congratulations to both Malaysian and Indonesian FC teams. Both of teams have again shown to the world great sportsmanship amid tense pressure.
We can learn from each other’s mistakes and it’s always learning in progress. I would say this year Malaysia and Indonesia have in fact lifted the prestige of the AFF Suzuki Cup. Congratulations again to Malaysia for winning the cup and to Indonesia for winning the game.
To those who swear, and condemn and are rude, be they from Malaysia or Indonesia, you guys need to go back to school.

Yes, Indonesia needs to learn from this failure. Anyway, I want to express my congratulations to Indonesia. I can see how much progress the Indonesia players made after their first game.
Be proud of yourselves, Indonesia. Malaysia’s Safee played so well. But you have to keep learning as well. Remember, you waited so long to become AFF  Suzuki Cup winners. Don’t fly too high. Keep learning.
On the laser issue, I can see Indonesian players didn’t think that was a cause for their failure at Bukit Jalil Stadium. It was just third parties who wanted to use this situation to damage the friendship between the two neighboring countries.
And, last night, Indonesia showed the world that their people can support the game fairly. Well done.

Congratulations Indonesia; congratulations Malaysia. I agree that Indonesian people are amazing. They still supported their team even though it failed to win the cup.
They are really dedicated and loyal to their team. They also respect their opponents even they know their team had a bad experience in Malaysia.

No matter what the result was congrats to both teams!
I am just really proud of Indonesian supporters. They were really educated people and supportive, with no lasers and no other bad manners during the game. Indonesia proved to the world that they could be a mature country. Malaysian supporters need to learn from Indonesia to become more fair.

Congrats to the Malaysian team for winning the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time ever. And thank you Indonesia for making it a good soccer match and for being an excellent host.
To players of both teams, your sportsmanship was exemplary. You showed that no one is bigger than the beautiful game. You showed the true spirit of ASEAN for which the tournament was meant to foster. There is nothing wrong with the game of football or between the two peoples of the contesting nations.
The problem is with those silly people with their stupid lasers, and those who attempted to use these sickening and irresponsible acts to fan hatred and animosity amongst the two neighboring countries.
To these people, be they Malaysian or Indonesian: Grow up! Only then can we think about bidding to be the hosts of the World Cup, together!
Again, congratulations to both the Malaysian and Indonesian teams.

I think the standard of play in both Indonesian and Malaysian footballs has improved tremendously, as proven in both legs of the AFF Suzuki Cup final. I can foresee both teams advancing at a rapid pace in the near future and challenging the likes of the Middle-Eastern teams and the traditional giants, Japan and Korea.
Perhaps a joint bid by Indonesia and Malaysia to host the World Cup can be considered in the distant future. Who knows? Keep working hard, and all your dreams will come true.
Anyway, well done to both teams. It was a fantastic game. We have proven to the world that ASEAN football is not far behind.

I’m proud of both teams for showing true sportsmanship. I hope to see Malaysia and Indonesia playing each other again. Congratulations to Indonesian for winning the second match and to my beloved country for winning the cup.

Indonesian supporters had very good manners. They showed how to enjoy and respect the game, whatever the result, and to respect their opponents from singing the national anthem until the match was over.
It was so mature and full of ethical culture.

The finals brought the entire nations of Malaysia and Indonesia together supporting their respective countries. No politics, no religion, no race. Pure sport. We are one world.

Congratulations to both teams. You all played like professionals. What we want is for there to be no more quarreling between Indonesia and Malaysia. No one can break us. We are good neighbors. Allah bless Malaysia and Indonesia.

It was great game; excellent sportsmanship by the players, quickly acknowledging bad tackles and taking it like men. No retaliations; just shaking hands and moving on. I guess Indonesians and Malaysians can get along after all.
It’s a shame we have politicians who exploit the differences for their own personal gain. I hope our striker gets a chance to fulfill his dream to play in the Indonesian league, just like Bambang Pamungkas did in Malaysia.
