Floods swamp Medan, North Sumatra

A- A A+

The overflowing Deli River has caused flooding in Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, and its surrounding areas.

As of Thursday, Floodwaters had submerged at least 10 subdistricts in Medan, in the largest flood disaster the city has seen since 2002, kompas.com reported Thursday.

The floods began at 11 p.m. Wednesday, when water levels ranged between 1.5 meters and 2 meters deep.

Flashfloods caused by recent heavy rains in the upstream areas caused the Deli to burst its banks, leaving Medan and coastal lowland areas awash.
