JAKARTA: Jakarta is short of more than 8,000 teachers for all levels of education, an official says.
“We need 46,548 teachers in total, but currently we only have 37,976. So we still lack 8,572 teachers,” Jakarta Education Agency head Taufik Yudi Mulyanto said Friday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
He said part of the problem was that many teacher candidates fell short of the qualifications set by the agency.
Currently Jakarta has 6,952 substitute teachers and 11,751 teachers who work on a temporary basis.
“We have filed a report about the shortage of teachers with the Regional Staffing Body [BKD]”.
BKD head Budi Hastuti said the body had opened up opportunities for new teachers to become regional staff members during civil servant candidate recruitment. — JP
