SBY supports deponeering for Bibit-Candra case

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Monday that he would support the Attorney General's Office's plan to employ an extraordinary legal maneuver known as deponeering to halt a bribery case leveled at two Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders, Bibit Samad Waluyo and Candra Hamzah.

“I support the AGO's plan on deponeering. It is the AGO’s authority to [use] deponeering for the case according to the law,” SBY said during a Cabinet meeting in Jakarta.

Deponeering is an Indonesian legal move in which the AGO may dismiss a legal case with the backing of the House of Representatives, for the the sake of the public interest. It is usually reserved for cases that have the potential to threaten the nation's stability.

If Bibit and Candra were convicted, the KPK would be reduced to two leaders, having already lost its chairman, Antasari Azhar, after he was convicted of murder.
