JAKARTA: Telco company PT Global Telekomunikasi Prima (Telprim) will soon build a broadband optic network in Sulawesi which will then be linked to the Philippines.

Telprim planning and development director Arif Basuki said the company has secured a principal permit from the Communications and Information Ministry for the US$95 million project.

“Therefore we will start soon to build up Sulawesi as a network hub in eastern Indonesia. There will be also an alternative international backbone through Philippines,” he said in a statement sent on Wednesday.

“The project will link Makassar with Palu, Gorontalo and Manado before being continuing to Mindanao, and will be finished in five years,” he said

However, Arif told The Jakarta Post over the phone that the project might be finished in three years “if everything goes smoothly”.

“The next step will be to link Palu with Kendari and make a connection to eastern Indonesia through either Makassar or Manado,” Arif said. — JP
