President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked for an immediate investigation of the fatal crash of the Kutajaya and Mutiara trains in Banjar, West Java on Friday.

The President told reporters in Dubai during a layover en route to Jakarta that he was paying "'full attention" to the accident, given the series of accidents plaguing the nation's rail system over the last five years.

"I've asked the Vice President to find out what's wrong because these things have happened repeatedly. [We must] impose sanctions on whoever has made mistakes. This is either human error, leadership error or something else," he said early Sunday morning Dubai time as quoted by Antara news agency.

"Public transport users must really be subject to safety guarantees and better comfort. I've been paying attention to the transportation sector because I think there have been many accidents that shouldn't have happened."

The President sent his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident.

The Kutojaya and Mutiara trains collided at Langensari railway station in Banjar on early Friday morning, killing three people and injuring 23 others.
