DENPASAR: In the run-up to World Cancer Day, Udayana University Medical School students on Sunday organized events aimed at increasing public awareness of the scourge.
The events were held at Nitimandala field in Renon, a spacious public space comprising several soccer fields and volleyball courts, a jogging track and a museum. The area is a favorite Sunday morning destination for city residents.
Students joined residents in a mass aerobic workout and later offered free health checks to residents. They also spoke to visitors about the dangers of cancer as well as available preventive and curative measures for the disease.
“A balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and early detection are several key points that we tried to impress upon the public,” Amanda, one of the students, said. She did not mention quitting smoking.
The students plan to organize a public talk show next week featuring a cancer specialist. World Cancer Day falls on Feb. 4. —JP
