Ariel gets 3 years, 6 months
in prison

Popular Indonesian singer Nazriel Ilham, aka "Ariel Peterpan", has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison and ordered to pay Rp 250 million in fines for his alleged role in the production and distribution of a pornographic video.

The verdict is lighter than that demanded by prosecutors, which was at least five years.

“The court has handed down three-and-a-half years' imprisonment to Nazriel Ilham,” chief justice Singgih Budi Prakoso said at the Bandung District Court on Monday.

Ariel was found guilty of having made and distributed pornographic videos. He was also fined Rp 250 million, to be paid over the course of three months.

Prior to the issuance of the verdict, prosecutors had demanded Ariel serve five years in prison. Ariel’s legal advisor, OC Kaligis, had immediately voiced objections.

OC Kaligis said the charges against Ariel had not been assessed carefully, particularly as many of Ariels alleged legal violations took place in 2008.

"His alleged violations occurred before the law was made," OC Kaligis said.
