Bank
Indonesia (BI) Governor Darmin Nasution officially proposed to the House
of Representatives on Monday a 7 percent pay raise for the central
bank’s employees and its high ranking officials.
If approved, the
pay increase would further widen the gap between the salary of the
central bank’s governor, among the highest-paid executives in the
country, and that of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who recently
said that his salary had not been increased since he was first elected
in 2004.
Your comments:
Sri Mulyani is said to be getting around US$500,000 per year (tax free, plus allowances) at the
World Bank.
The
World Bank, in setting such high rates, sets up a “magnet” which tends
to pull up salaries for high officials in developing countries.

Government’s officials should be paid according to or close to the market rate to retain talent.
