JAKARTA: The Health Ministry has slapped an emergency status on Bali, Nias and Maluku regarding the spread of rabies in the areas.

The regions have the most cases in the country: 119 in Bali, 26 cases in Nias and 20 in Maluku. At least 119 residents died from a total of 74,858 cases reported nationwide last year.

Minister Endang Sedyaningsih said dog bites still caused 98 percent of the total cases, with the remainder caused by cats and monkeys.

“About 24 provinces are still prone to rabies,” she said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. — JP
