Bahasyim sentenced to 10 years in prison

Judges at South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday sentenced former tax officer Bahasyim Assifie to ten years in prison for corruption.
Bahasyim was a former tax officer at the taxation directorate.
The judges, lead by judge Didik Setyo Handono, also ordered Bahasyim pay a fine of Rp 250 million or face an extra three months in prison.
The verdict is five years less than the 15-year term demanded by prosecutors, and Rp 500 million in fines or another six months in prison.
Judges found Bahasyim guily of violating the 2001 Law on Corruption and the 2003 Law on Money Laundering.
Bahasyim was found to be unable to prove the source of funds amounting to more than Rp 60 billion and US$ 681,487, which he had channeled to several accounts belonging to his wife and children.
The funds were allegedly the product of money laundering activities.
Bahasyim was also found guilty of taking a Rp 1 billion bribe from Kartini Mulyadi, a commissioner at PT. Tempo Scan.
