Novita Angie: Prefers to stay out of the crowd

B

eing stuck in a traffic jam on the weekend is unlikely for 35-year-old emcee and radio DJ Novita Angie, since she prefers to stay at home with her two kids and her beloved hubby.

On weekdays, I have to get out of bed early in the morning to host a morning show at a private radio station in Jakarta. That’s why during weekends, I prefer to be lazy and wake up late, at about eight or nine, depending on what time I go to bed, because I’m the type of person who tries to get enough sleep -- at least seven hours a day.

After waking up, I cuddle with my two kids in the bedroom. Since I wake up late, I usually skip breakfast and go straight for lunch.

My hubby, a sports journalist at a weekly sports tabloid, and I normally spend most of our time together with our children on Saturday, since he has to be back to work at his office on Sunday. When we are together, we choose to stay at home, playing around with our kids, having a chit chat and watching movies on TV or DVDs.

Sometimes we go to a shopping center to have lunch together. We all like taking culinary trips. My eldest boy likes every kind of food, including western and Chinese, while my daughter is more into Indonesian dishes.

I cannot cook. If I get into the kitchen and try to cook something, it will be a disaster. I can only make pudding. I got the ability when I was becoming a TV presenter for a cooking show at a local TV station. Fortunately, my housemaid is a good cook, so I completely trust her on the cooking.

I admit that spending time at the mall is boring. Sometimes I want to go to other places that provide playgrounds for children. But we go to mall because we have limited entertainment destinations to go on the weekends. Malls have turned into picnic areas for many Jakartans because we lack outdoor areas for children to play.

But if we plan to go to outdoor places, for instance to an amusement park, I have to deal with many people who line up trying to get my picture.

There was a time when we went to Snow Bay Water Park at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah for swimming.

At the end of the day, I could not really enjoy my time there since many visitors asked me to take pictures with them and it distracted my attention from my children. I could not say no to the people, but I could not leave my family either.

So I prefer avoiding crowded public areas. Malls are still OK and better than other public places, since at malls people tend not to pay attention on others.

But, to be honest, I would rather lay low at home all day long. Why? Because I hate the city’s traffic. Jakarta’s traffic now is really, really bad, even on Saturday and Sunday.

I still can tolerate the congestion on weekdays, but during the weekends when most people do not go to work? I think it’s too much.
