Gayus changes tune, no longer cares to expose corruption: Lawyer

Adnan Buyung Nasution, former lawyer for graft convict Gayus H. Tambunan, says that Gayus feels betrayed by law enforcers and no longer cares about exposing corruption at the tax office.

"Gayus told me he could no longer maintain his commitment to exposing the tax mafia," Adnan said Tuesday.

He said Gayus felt that law enforcers failed to make full use of his testimony in order to expose corruption at the tax office. '

"He is disappointed he is the only one who is considered guilty," Adnan said.

Adnan and his team of lawyers officially stopped working for Gayus on Monday.

Differences of opinion as well as the fact that Gayus hired another lawyer were the main reasons for the parting of ways, he said.

Gayus, a former low-ranking tax official who had suspicious bank accounts totaling almost Rp 100 billion (US$11.2 million), was sentenced to seven years in prison for graft.

Gayus recently retracted some of his court testimony, including his statements that some of his wealth came from three companies belonging to the Bakrie Group.
